The New York Times, Best TV Shows of 2017
The Deuce makes the New York Times Best TV Shows of 2017 list. The article reads: "A drama about the 1970s sex business, on a channel with a penchant for salacious sex, could have gone wrong in many ways. It went right, very right..." For the full write up, click here.
Paste Magazine, "6 Black Actresses Who Are Leading Woman Material"
Including Natalie in a cadre of great fellow actresses, Shannon M Houston writes that in Crown Heights "one of the standout characters is Natalie Paul’s Antoinette. ... Paul is authentic and sincere in her portrayal of a woman falling in love and fighting inexhaustibly for justice. Paul also played a small role on the Starz hit Power and is responsible for one of the most important and progressive TV sex scenes of all time. Having landed a role on HBO’s The Deuce, I suspect that Paul is already well on her way to a leading role, but I’m really hoping to see her career move in some exciting and unexpected directions." Huffington Post, Best Films of 2017
"Everyday heroes are on view in this simple yet courageous story about two friends whose bond is stronger than a crooked Brooklyn District Attorney. In the wake of misguided films like Detroit, Crown Heights is a godsend. Director/writer Matt Ruskin’s understated style makes the film seem real. Lakeith Stanfield shines in the lead as a wrongfully convicted suspect. Nnamdi Asomugha plays the friend who never gives up on him. Pure inspiration." To read the full article, click here.
In a previous HuffPo review, Crown Heights is praised for the "best ensemble acting of the year, " and singles out Natalie as "magical... who finds a way to make Antoinette a pillar of strength."
IndieWire, "The Best TV Ensembles of 2017"
IndieWire mentions the Deuce in "The Best TV Ensembles of 2017 Demand Recognition Beyond the SAG Awards" :
" The Deuce has a sprawling cast of famous faces, like James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and young talent — like Dominique Fishback and Margarita Levieva. You’ve got curveball charmers (Method Man!) and veteran standouts (Michaael Rispoli), plus so many more in between. Gary Carr, Lawrence Gilliand Jr., Emily Meade, Natalie Paul, and Pernell Walker could all be legitimate picks for the best performance, but they collectively leave a powerful impression."
